ABOUT LIBRARY


As a research institute, AIAE undertakes projects, analysis and data gathering on the real economy. To achieve this end AIAE deploys a full range of media to communicate finding and inform public discussion on economic policy. AIAE library provides an important platform for documentation, dissemination, communication and promotion of the research findings. It also provides a physical space, a working environment and linkage to the treasures of the virtual library.

Strategic Aims

  • To liaise with relevant groups and individuals within the institute and beyond to ensure an informed and integrated approach to the delivery of information services
  • To select, acquire, organize and provide access to published information, in all physical forms, to support learning, teaching, and research in Applied Economics.
  • To develop a range of networked information and document delivery services
  • To engage in programmes to promote the effective and critical use of information
  • To provide a responsive and flexible enquiry service
  • To participate in provision for the wider local, regional and national needs for library and information services
  • To continually evaluate services and resource provision to ensure relevance and cost effectiveness

Location

AIAE is located at the Institute's secretariat. It has the loveliest view of the Institute. It is positioned at the ground floor of the building away from noise although it overlooks everything and every activity in the Institute.

Patrons

AIAE library is open to all Staff, Research Fellows and Postgraduate students that are duly registered with the Library. The library operates a limited borrowing policy to Research Fellows therefore every other consultation of library holdings is done in the library during the working hours. Postgraduate students and other occasional users that may want to use library are not entitled to borrowing library resources.

Automation

The Library is on the track of implementation of library automation system. This will bring improvement in what the library can offer and installation of security system. Plans are in hand for an interactive library web page with links in a way that will suite our users.

Library hours

The library is open within the hours of 8.00am-12.30pm and between 1.30pm-4.30pm Mondays to Fridays

Library Vision

As a center of intense intellectual inquiry, the African Institute for Applied Economics, Library shares with the Institute the aspiration to be at par with other world class library.

In this desired future, the Library ensures that its collections remain forward-looking, diverse in breadth and form, open to browsing, and of world-renowned quality. Through promotion, the Library makes people aware of the resources available to them, and through innovation, it makes access to these resources easier. The Library’s creation of an integrated, seamless web of information further streamlines access. To serve future users, the Library preserves information across all formats and ensures effective storage and delivery systems. The Library’s physical and virtual spaces respond to the changing habits of its users to enrich the institute’s experience and to multiply the ways in which people can pursue inquiry. The Library’s collaboration with expanding circles of partners yields unified access, broadening knowledge, and enhanced services.

The Library continues to embrace change and align itself to thrive on diversity, to support professional growth and opportunity, and to reward flexibility and innovation.

The African Institute for Applied Economics Library provides integrated library and information services in support of the Institute's overall aims and objectives, as embodied in the mission statement and strategic plan. Paying due regard to the need for cost effectiveness, the Institute's library will continue to be responsive to user demand and proactive in the development of services and use of new technology

The African Institute for Applied Economics Library is dedicated to enriching life through the expansion of knowledge in applied economics. In pursuit of this mission, the Library

•  builds collections and provides access to information resources in support of the research of the users

World Bank/IMF titles: World Development Reports, Annual Reports, Global Economic Prospects, World and Africa Development Indicators, Global Development Finance, World Bank Atlas and Little Data Book, World Bank Discussion/Technical and Research Working Papers, IMF Economic Issues, IMF Occasional Papers, Training and Course Materials, etc.

Other Institutional Publications: AERC Research and Special Papers, KIPPRA Policy Research Analysis, NESG Economic Indicators, United Nations Conference on Developments, CBN Annual Reports, and Statement of Account etc

Newspapers and Magazines: The Library engages in Newspaper indexing on topical Economic issues. These Newspapers are; The Guardian, This Day, Financial Standard, Business Day, etc The following Magazines are also found in the Library; Tell, News watch, etc

Book section

All the resources above represent a section in the layout of the library. How ever the bulk of the Library resources are divided into the following:

Generalia, Political Economics, Systems and Theories, Mathematical Economics and Econometrics, Financial Economics, Development Economics, Public Administration, Poverty and Social Services, Commerce/Trade, Industrial Economics and Economic History.

All these categories are annotated with set of numbers for easy retrieval.

LIBRARY REGULATIONS


1. Admission

The facilities of the Library are open to all members of staff and registered fellows of the institute. Other persons seeking to use the Library for the purpose of study or research may be admitted at the discretion of the Librarian. Occasional visitors must sign the visitors' book.

2. Discipline

(a) All users of the Library are required to conduct themselves quietly and to obey any instructions from the Library staff, including the production of acceptable means of identification.

(b) Bags, cases and coats must not be taken into the Library, except where a security system is in use.

(c) Food and/or drinks may not be taken into or consumed in the Library. Smoking is not permitted..

(d) Under no circumstances may books or journals be removed from Library premises unless an appropriate loan transaction has been completed. Readers are reminded that any breach of this rule can render them liable to a fine imposed by the Librarian, disciplinary action within the institute and also in some cases to legal proceedings.

(f) The use of personal stereos and mobile phones in the Library is not permitted. These items should be switched off on entry to the Library.

3. Borrowing

(a) All readers must complete the appropriate loan transaction when making an application to borrow any book or other publication. In the case of volumes not returned or returned in a badly damaged condition the institute reserves the right to require the replacement by another copy or the payment of the estimated value. All volumes must be returned for check or upon request by the Librarian.

(b) Current issues and bound volumes of periodicals, reference books so marked, and other material temporarily or permanently restricted, may not be borrowed except by permission of the Librarian.

(c) Four Hour Loans

Books in heavy demand, may be borrowed for specific sessions and must be returned by the time stamped.

(d) Day Loans

Books in this category may be borrowed from any time in the day until 4.30pm daily and be returned two days later. Items borrowed on Friday must be returned by Monday.

(e) Week Loans

Books in this category may be borrowed for a period normally of seven days and must be returned by the date stamped.

(f) Two Week Loans

Books in this category may be borrowed for a period normally of two weeks and must be returned by the date stamped, or after seven days when recalled for other readers, whichever is the earlier.

(g) Loan Limits

Loan limits for the various categories of books for staff and users are as determined by the Librarian.

(h) Limited borrowing facilities may be granted to other persons wishing to use the Library upon written application to the Librarian.

(i) Provided books are not reserved, loans may be renewed on request.

(j) Library staff may disclose information on the loans of individual users to third parties to facilitate access to material and for the purposes of disciplinary procedures resulting from breaches in Library regulations.

(k) Users who are away from the institute should not borrow library items without prior arrangement with the Librarian. Items borrowed under such agreements will remain subject to recall and must be returned promptly at the borrower's expense.

Item Borrowing Limits

Certain categories of materials have limits as to how many items of that type may be on loan to a borrower at any given time. The following types of materials have the stated number of items borrowing limit:

4. Fines and Penalties

(a) For failure to return a book on Four Hour Loan by the time stamped, staff and user will be charged a fine of N10 for the first hour or part of an hour and N5 for each subsequent hour the Library is open

(b) For failure to return a book on Day Loan by the time stamped, staff and users will be charged a fine of N10 for the first hour or part of an hour and N10 for each subsequent hour the Library is open

(c) For failure to return a book on Week Loan by the date stamped, staff and users will be charged a fine of N20 per day.

(d) For failure to return a book on two-Week loan by the date stamped or within seven days of a recall notice being sent by the Librarian, staff and students will be charged a fine of N10.

(e) In exceptional circumstances fines may be waived or commuted at the discretion of the Librarian.

(f) A user who fails to return an item by the required date and/or fails to pay fines due will normally have all borrowing privileges suspended by the Librarian until the matter is cleared. Disciplinary proceedings may be instituted in cases of prolonged delay, or where there are repeated offences against the borrowing regulations.

(g) A user found in unauthorized possession of Library material may be fined up to four times the replacement costs.

(h) Damage to library material, including the removal of pages from books and journals, will be regarded as an offence under the Code of Misconduct. Penalties can range from fines up to N200 for minor offences and the requirement to pay for the damage, to fines up to N1, 000 for major offences and possible exclusion from using the library.

(i) Regulations for the use of computers in the Library follow the institute managerial decisions.

 

5. Failure to Return Items

5.1 Users failing to return loaned items by the required date and failing to pay fines will be written to by the Librarian warning them that action will be taken to recover both the value of the book and the administration costs incurred. If the user fails to respond adequately, the matter will be referred to the administration.

5.2 Users so referred to the will receive a letter from the Registry warning them that the book must be returned and any fines paid within fourteen days of the date of the letter or an invoice will be raised for the value of the book(s) plus the administrative costs involved.

5.3 Users failing to respond adequately to the letter from the librarian within the due dates will then receive an invoice for the value of the book(s) plus the administrative costs.

5.4 The administrative charge for recovery in is determined by the administrative officers

 

6. Printing & copying.

It's not possible to print or copy an entire e-book – that would be copyright infringement. You can print one page at a time or save text by using your browser's print and save functions. The library offer limited reprographic services to users and associate fellows of the institute

General

Any complaints or suggestions for improvements of the service should be discussed with the Librarian
