National Policy Symposium on “Lessons of the Global Economic Crisis for Nigeria”

Making sense of the Global Economic CrisisThe Institute, in collaboration with the Policy Analysis and Research Project (PARP) of the National Assembly, recently held a National Policy Symposium on the Global Economic Recession and Challenges for Nigeria. The Symposium took place on the 18th of June, 2009 at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

The Policy Symposium sought to carry out a critical analysis of evidence-based knowledge to differentiate between the “right” and “wrong” lessons to garner from the global economic crisis. This distinction is expected to help federal and state governments avoid the risks of making mistakes in assimilating these lessons. It was also aimed at providing evidence-based knowledge for advocacy by private sector and civil society groups across the country.

Some of the highlights of the symposium include a series of thematic papers presented in the Inception Workshop. They studied the issues surrounding the Global Crisis and were to provide a basic framework that would guide subsequent discussions.

After the Inception workshop, the Opening Session and First plenary took place. After opening remarks by the Special Guest of Honour, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, GCON, Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Chairman,His Excellency, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President, there were Overview Papers by Dr. Osita Ogbu, Former Economic Adviser to the President/Chief Executive, National Planning Commission and Prof. Mike Obadan of the University of Benin.

There was ample provision in the symposium for plenary discussion which were both lively and fruitful. Without a doubt the programme was a landmark event, helping to generate a better understanding to the implications of the global recession for Nigeria while providing a platform for subsequent policy dialogue.
